'Start with DAP's two seats first'

Source : Daily Express 19/05/2010

Kota Kinabalu: Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP) has no intention to vacate its seats to trigger by-elections in order to gain temporary allocations, carrots and sweets from the present Barisan Nasional (BN) government.

"In fact, SAPP is committed to fight for the rights and Sabah's development by way of gaining more autonomy so that we could cause a bigger, more meaningful and realistic change to the political landscape of Sabah," said its Information Chief, Chong Pit Fah, Tuesday.

He said there were much larger issues such as the loss of Block L and Block M oil fields concerning the sovereignty of the State, the deteriorating medical services, the threatening presence of a large population of illegal immigrants, land grabs, inflation, youth unemployment and piping away of the State's oil and gas, among others.

He said SAPP representatives in the State Assembly and Parliament would continue to raise any issue pertaining to Sabah and the people's interest.

"SAPP will not be distracted from its work with the challenge of Dr Edwin Bosi of Sabah DAP, whatever his real motive is," said Chong.

He was responding to Edwin's suggestion that SAPP relinquish all its seats to pave the way for by-elections so that instant development and funding could come immediately to their areas from the BN government.

Edwin said it had become a BN government trend to pump in a lot of cash and instant development to constituencies having a by-election such as the one in Hulu Selangor and Sibu.

Chong said in case Edwin was ignorant, Article 17 (5) of the Sabah Constitution provides that an elected member who resigns his membership of the legislative assembly shall be disqualified from contesting for five years from the date of resignation.

"However, if DAP wants to go on with their idea of resigning to cause by-elections and wish to vacate the Kota Kinabalu Parliament seat and Sri Tanjung State seat, it is really up to them," he said.

Sabah DAP's call for SAPP to relinquish its seats was the latest after several BN component parties, including Sepanggar Umno Chief, Jumat Idris, who challenged Sepanggar MP Datuk Eric Majimbun to vacate his seat for a fresh election.

"It seems these Kuala Lumpur-based parties are trying to belittle SAPP with these challenges.

My message is don't belittle SAPP's capabilities as a local-based party," said Chong.

Religion mistake in MyKad can be rectified

Source : daily Express 19/05/2010

Kota Belud: The Barisan Nasional (BN) sympathises with the people in Sabah who are facing difficulty because the religious status in their identity documents or MyKad was wrongly stated as Islam just because they had a "bin" or "binti" to their names.

Sabah BN Secretary, Datuk Abdul Rahman Dahlan said the problem could be easily resolved if those affected would refrain from getting help from the opposition.

He stressed that those who want to help this particular group should be genuinely sincere and strive to help them settle their problem instead of raising more confusion.

"We really sympathise with the issues involving our people in Sabah regarding mistakes in the identity documents issued by the National Registration Department (NRD)," he said.

At the same time, he assured that the BN is keen to settle the problem.

He was commenting on the statement by Sabah Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) deputy chairperson Christina Liew recently.

On Liew's statement that the NRD would simply state the person's religion as "Islam" if the name has a bin or binti, he said the NRD usually would refer to the documents of the applicants' parents when applying for birth certificate or when applying for the MyKad.

He said the NRD procedure is very clear, i.e., that a person would only be given Muslim status based on the documents of his or her parents at the time the application was made.

"Christina's statement is very confusingÉas a lawyer, she should know the procedure," he said.

Abdul Rahman said if the person wants to revert the Muslim status in his MyKad to non-Muslim, the person must obtain a declaration from the Syariah Court.

He said even if the person uses a letter of oath that declares he is not a Muslim or the baptismal certificate, it was still inadequate.

He said although such documents would strengthen the applicant's case, it would not be used in the NRD procedure.

On Liew's claim that the Sabah NRD Director refused to meet her to settle Adenin Ahmad case, he said she and those involved had been given explanation on the matter.

However, because the Syariah Court had convened the trial for May 11, he said it was better to wait for the outcome of the trial.

"I am very disappointed that Christina painted a picture as if the NRD is trying to avoid from settling the problem," he said.

On the Pakatan Rakyat (PR) claim that such cases run into the thousands in Sabah, he said he would also like for the problems to be resolved and urged Liew to give the NRD the list of names of those affected.

Abdul Rahman said if the mistake was clerical error, it could be easily resolved but that if it the documents showed the parents were Muslim, the NRD has no choice but to put Islam in the child's MyKad religion status.

DAP wins Sibu

Source : Borneo Post 17/05/2010

SIBU: After three unsuccessful attempts, State DAP chairman Wong Ho Leng finally made a breakthrough and won the Sibu parliamentary seat when he beat BN-SUPP candidate Robert Lau Hui Yew with a 398-vote majority.

Wong garnered 18,845 votes while Hui Yew collected 18,447 votes. Independent candidate Narawi Haron managed to garner only 232 votes and lost his RM10,000 deposit.

Voter turnout was 59.86 per cent with a total of 32,742 voters casting their votes.

The by-election was held following the demise of its MP Datuk Robert Lau Hoi Chew on April 9 due to cancer.

After Returning Officer Wong See Meng announced the official results at about 10.58 pm, supporters of DAP and its allies inside the Civic centre shouted words of joy, accompanied by screams of ‘Reformasi’ and ‘Vote for DAP.’

Wong was a picture of exuberance as he expressed gratitude to the voters for giving him their solid support.

“Together, we will bring change to Sibu and my victory today is just the beginning for historic changes in Sibu,” he said to thundering applause from his supporters.

Among those accompanying him were DAP national advisor Lim Kit Siang and Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng.

After the press conference, Wong exited the Civic centre and was greeted with thunderous applaud from the thousands of DAP supporters who had earlier camped there.

About 10 minutes later, Hui Yew walked up to him and congratulated Wong for his victory.

In 1995, Wong took on the late Lau but he lost the election tamely, garnering 10,472 votes against Lau’s 15,317 votes.

In the 2004 election, Wong took another gamble and managed to secure 17,334 against Lau who garnered 20,689 votes.

In the March 2008 election, Wong was again no match for Lau, securing 15,746 votes against Lau’s 19,295 votes.

Wong was trailing Hui Yew when the votes from the rural areas poured in and, at one stage, Hui Yew even led by more than 2,000 votes.

However, when the ballot boxes from the polling stations in the urban areas came in, Wong gradually reduced the deficit.

When the votes from the 51st ballot box was announced, Wong managed to overtake Lau for the first time and won by a majority of 49 votes.

He widened the majority votes to 1,063 by the time the votes from the 77th ballot box was announced and 2,036 majority votes when it reached the 90th ballot box.

At about 9pm, and when the results of the remaining 11 ballot boxes were about to be released, disaster struck.

It took the Election Commission more than a two-hour wait before the votes from through the postal ballot boxes were finally brought into the counting centre.

From the postal ballot boxes, Lau secured 2,323 votes while Wong only garnered 70 votes, while Narawi got 36.

There were 208 spoilt votes and 190 ballot papers were not returned.

Melanie is doubtful of Petronas' assurance

Source : Daily Express 15/05/2010

Kota Kinabalu: The Federal Government through Petronas ought to ensure adequate supply of natural gas from the oil and gas terminal at Kimanis to generate energy, which is crucial to development in Sabah.

Luyang Assemblywoman Melanie Chia said that adequate supply of natural gas is crucial to ensure that the proposed development in the State could take off, not to mention development of the oil and gas downstream industries, which can generate greater employment opportunities and spur economic development.

The SAPP Wanita Chief said this in response to Plantation Industries and Commodity Minister Tan Sri Bernard Dompok's recent statement supporting the State Government's move to develop Kimanis and Sipitang into oil and gas towns.

Dompok said that the Federal Cabinet had instructed Petronas to give priority to Sabah if the State required the resources.

While noting that there was a guarantee that no gas will be transported to Sarawak through the Kimanis-Bintulu pipeline if there was a need (for gas) here, Dompok said, therefore, the State Government have to look at the infrastructure for the utilisation of gas.

He also revealed that the State Government had already received a written commitment from the national oil company assuring compliance.

Nonetheless, Melanie was doubtful of Petronas's assurance.

"Is Petronas truly committed to giving the natural gas we require for our development? Is the Federal Government committed to its promise to give priority to Sabah for our oil and natural gas resources requirement?" she asked.

She feared that KKIP Sdn Bhd, a State GLC, would fail if the Sabah Government, in upholding Sabah interest, is unable to assist them to solve problems related to adequate supply of natural gas for energy intensive industries.

She pointed out that State Minister of Industrial Development Datuk Raymond Tan Shu Kiah had announced that KKIP Sdn Bhd needed 42 million cubic feet of natural gas daily and electricity supply of 354 MW for a proposed solar glass manufacturer.

KKIP Sdn Bhd has proposed to sign a commitment to investor, the Sun Bear Polar Sdn Bhd which wanted to build a RM5.3 billion plant to produce solar glass panels with silica sand from northern Sabah.

"The investment would fail if the State Government is unable to help to ensure adequate natural gas supply by Petronas É there must be a firm commitment by Petronas," Melanie said.

"If the State Government is not able to secure this supply commitment from Petronas, other potential investors either local or foreign would also not come to Sabah."

She said that if the proposed signing with Sun Bear Polar failed, Sabah would lose the RM5.3 billion investment which could potentially create 1,082 employment opportunities, development of supporting industries and the development of the small and medium enterprises (SMEs), and income from land revenue, among others.

She also urged the Government to update the people on the status of the Sun Bear investment as to whether it is going ahead or not, and whether adequate natural gas is made available for Sabah industrial development, including Sun Bear.

Oil blocks deal not clearly explained: Karim

Source : Daily Express 15/05/2010

Kota Kinabalu: The Government needs to come up with a detailed explanation, particularly with a map, to show the actual location of the controversial oil blocks M and L in the South China Sea, to clear any doubt among Sabahans on the matter.

Veteran Umno politician, Datuk Karim Ghani, said this is vital if the Barisan Nasional (BN) State Government does not want to suffer the fate of the former Berjaya State Government which collapsed after Labuan was surrendered to the Federal Government.

"So that the people of Sabah know if the said oil blocks are located in Sabah or SarawakÉif in Sarawak we got nothing to say about it, but in Sabah why it was surrendered without us (the State) benefiting from it," he said.

He said what the people in Sabah know now only that firstly the ex-PM Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi signed the Letter of Exchange between Malaysia and Brunei when he went to Brunei before he stepped down.

And then his predecessor Tun Mahathir Mohamad disclosed the matter in his blog, followed by the responses by SAPP President Datuk Yong Teck Lee and Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) Vice President Datuk Dr Jeffrey Kitingan.

"I find there is a truth in what Yong and Dr Jeffrey were saying that the matter should have been brought to the State Legislative AssemblyÉbut still we also need to know in detail whether they (blocks M and L) belong to Sabah or Sarawak," said Karim, an ex-Assemblyman for Bongawan, former Senator as well as a Sabah Umno pioneer.

He said if it is within the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) then "it is supposed to be called a circle, instead of block, and if it is within the circle meaning it is overlapping.

"If it is overlapping then there should be a joint venture (with Sabah also)Éwhy say after 40 years we surrender it to Brunei, whilst it should be forever," he said, adding under the Constitutions the Sabah people should be consulted first.

"If this matter failed to be explained fully, Sabah people will get angry and salah-salah nanti kerajaan kena buang (the present government may be thrown out)," he said.

Karim said history has proven that the people of Sabah have the power to do so, no matter strong the ruling State Government is, like the case of Berjaya.

Chief Minister, Datuk Musa Aman, had on May 5 said Sabah has not ceded any of its territory in the Federal Government's agreement with Brunei over the 2009 demarcation of maritime boundaries.

He said the State Attorney-General Datuk Roderick Fernandez informed him that no Sabah territory was ceded under the agreement inked towards the end of Abdullah's term in office.

Yong alleged ceding of the two oil blocks was unconstitutional as it did not get the consent of the State Legislative Assembly and the Conference of Rulers.

Mahathir had claimed that the Abdullah administration had surrendered the two blocks to Brunei in exchange for Brunei dropping its claims on Limbang in Sarawak. But Brunei had denied they agreed to give up Limbang and Wisma Putra and Abdullah did not rebut Brunei's statement.

Abdullah, in denying Mahathir's claim, explained that the agreement had allowed Malaysia to be part of an exploration of petroleum resources from the two areas.

Confirmed - sports betting legalised

Source : Daily Express 14/04/2010

Kuala Lumpur: Malaysia has legalised sports betting, a move supporters claim will curb illegal gambling and boost government coffers.

Ascot Sports, a company controlled by influential tycoon Vincent Tan, has been granted a licence that will allow it to offer odds in time for the hugely popular English Premier League season.

"Ascot Sports has been re-issued the sports betting licence by the Ministry of Finance which was first issued in 1987," gaming group Berjaya - of which Tan is a major shareholder - said in a statement.

Berjaya, a conglomerate with holdings ranging from lottery to casino operations, will acquire a 70 per cent stake in Ascot Sports by paying Tan RM525 million.

The 1987 permit was quickly rescinded and an attempt to revive it several years ago failed because of opposition to gambling, which is forbidden in Islam.

Berjaya said that legalising sports betting will curb illegal bookmaking and bring huge revenues to the Government.

"By some estimates, the illegal sports betting market in Malaysia is thought to be as much as RM20 billion per annum," it said.

"This represents a tremendous loss of tax revenue to the Government which Ascot Sports hopes to be able to mitigate."

The company will launch products based on internationally popular sporting events including football, basketball, motor racing, tennis and golf.

"Ascot Sports will also offer telephone betting convenience and only adults above 21 years old and non-Muslims will be allowed to open a telephone betting account," Berjaya said.

Malaysia's conservative Islamic party is among the groups that have criticised plans to award the sports gambling licence, which they fear could promote betting and increase debt.

Its youth wing will hold a protest outside a mosque on Friday in the capital Kuala Lumpur after afternoon prayers.

"There will be a big demonstration. We oppose the Government's decision to award the sports gambling licence. We want the Government to cancel the licence," Kamarulzaman Mohamad, Secretary of PAS Youth wing, told AFP.

Hatta Ramli, PAS treasurer said: "It is a social and religious sin to gamble.

We cannot accept it. It will break up families and attract the young into this vice activity."

N. Marimuthu, President of the Federation of Malaysian Consumers Association, said the government should seek other ways to raise revenue.

"There are better ways to generate income for the nation.

I do not believe we have to resort to legalising sports gambling," he said.

Government officials have said they plan to channel the revenue generated from legalising betting into sports development, but that the move will not eradicate match-fixing which has long blighted football in Asia.

Satellite TV transmission to Sabah, S'wak interior

Source : Daily Express 13/05/2010

Sibu: Some 200,000 people in the interior of Sarawak and Sabah will be able to enjoy Free to air TV via satellite transmission from August, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.

The Government was taking the move in response to issues raised in the Dewan Rakyat about the lack of television coverage especially by the TV1, TV2 and TV3 channels in rural areas in Sarawak like Kapit, Belaga and Marudi.

"This is another promise of the Barisan Nasional (BN) government that we are able to deliver," he said when launching Radio Televisyen Malaysia's (RTM) satellite transmission service to Sarawak and Sabah's interiors and the 1Malaysia computer, in conjunction with a dinner with Sibu's Chinese business community, Wednesday.

His wife Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor, Sarawak Chief Minister Tan Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud, Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman, Information Communication and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Dr Rais Yatim and the BN's candidate for the Sibu by-election Lau Hui Yew were also present.

The project which is a joint effort by the Information Communication and Culture Ministry, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission, RTM and pay-TV operator Astro will also benefit 40,000 residents of 124 longhouses in Sarawak.

He said this also reflected the actual implementation of 1Malaysia - ensuring that the people, especially in Sarawak and Sabah, irrespective of their backgrounds, had access to information on the latest developments taking place.

By launching the transmission via satellite, the government is expected to save infrastructure and operating cost of almost RM90 million.

The Prime Minister said the government was aware that about 12 per cent of the population did not get television coverage because of the remoteness of where they lived.

This factor made it not practical or economical to build transmission stations for television broadcasts but with the packages that would be offered for the TV1, TV2, TV3 and several Astro channels, which would be determined later, this segment of the population would be able to enjoy free television coverage, he said.

At the same time, he said, efforts were being intensified to overcome technical difficulties so that RTM's radio coverage could also be transmitted via satellite to the same segment.

At the same function, Najib also distributed Netbooks with the 1Malaysia brand each worth RM999 to 50 needy students from around Sibu.

He said a total of 1,000 units of the computer would be distributed nationwide to targetted groups, including those in lower income groups like people living in traditional and new villages.

The provision of the computers is part of the National Broadband Initiative aimed at making a quantum leap in information communication technology in line with the New Economic Model and achieving developed nation status by 2020.

'Not a question of SAPP not being patient'

Source : Daily Express 13/05/2010

Kota Kinabalu: Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP) Petagas CLC Chairman, Dullie Marie said Putatan MP Datuk Dr Marcus Mojigoh's statement in Tuesday's local papers shows a desperate man trying to wriggle his way out of the proverbial hole of fairy tales and concocted stories.

"It was actually Mojigoh who claimed "as a person who knows about positional fixing and international boundaries as well as the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ)" that he can show Datuk Yong Teck Lee and Datuk Dr Jeffrey Kitingan "anytime and anywhere".

"So, it was never a question of SAPP not being patient," he said in a statement here Wednesday.

Dullie said Yong had on May 4 asked for the State to publish an official map of Sabah showing its maritime boundaries.

"As for the implication, nobody ever said anything about Attorney-General. By the way, who is the current State Attorney-General?

As reported that since the State Cabinet was briefed twice, surely they have some opinion legal or otherwise.

"Can the State government disclose these matters? In addition, both SAPP's Sepanggar and Tawau MPs already filed in questions and motion for the coming Parliament session," he said.

Yong, he said had directed several questions to both the Federal and State Government and none of these questions had been furnished with any answer.

Instead, he said Mojigoh came out with statements trying to down play the seriousness of the matter.

"What Mojigoh seemed to be doing was trying to get Sabah people not to be overly concerned about the immense issue of national boundaries and Sabah interest.

"Who is he helping? Mojigoh said he has got heart for Sabah.

Then show us your heart," he said.

As a Sabah MP, Mojigoh instead of raising concern for Sabah's interest had tried to mislead the public that Block L and M are purely watered areas and different from landed areas, he said.

A vote for BN, a ‘Yes’ for PM

Source : New Sabah Times 12/05/2010

SIBU: A vote for Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate Robert Lau Hui Yew in the Sibu by-election is a vote of support for the good leadership of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, said Deputy Information, Communication and Culture Minister Datuk Joseph Salang Gandum.

He said the by-election on May 16 was yet another opportunity for Sarawak longhouse folks to express their support for Najib. Salang said this at a “meet-the-people” session at the Rh. James Sembilan Guang longhouse in Bawang Assan near here Monday night.

He said Najib deserved all the support he needed as he was still in the process of transforming the government and the country. Najib was also trying to change the country into a high income society from its current middle income status, he said, adding that longhouse folks should not allow themselves to be easily swayed by the opposition’s instigations and promises as they did not have any concrete programmes to help them.

He thus advised Sibu voters to turn out in full force on polling day (May 16) to cast their votes and give the BN a resounding victory.

Meanwhile, Salang said the government would look into improving communication links in the Bawang Assan area.

“We may set up a community broadband centre and “wifi” village in the SMK Bawang Assan for instance,”he said, adding that they were required as the area now had a sizeable population with eight longhouses and two schools. The Sibu by-election is seeing a three-way fight between Lau, the DAP’s Wong Ho Leng and independent candidate Narawi Haron.

Logical to develop oil-gas sector in Sabah: Dompok

Source : Daily Express 10/05/2010

KINARUT: Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman's announcement on the plan to develop Kimanis and Sipitang into oil and gas towns reciprocates the Federal Government's strong commitment to develop the industry in Sabah.

Plantation Industries and Commodity Minister Tan Sri Bernard Dompok said he supported the State Government's move as announced by Musa at the First Borneo International Oil and Gas Conference on Friday.

"I think this is a good move because there is no reason why we should not utilise the resources that we have," he said, when met at the Montfort Youth Training Centre (MYTC), Sunday.

Dompok, who is also United Pasok Momogun Kadazandusun Murut Organisation (Upko) President said in fact the Federal Cabinet had made a decision that reflected its commitment to develop Sabah's oil and gas industry.

He explained that he had raised his objection to the Kimanis-Bintulu gas pipeline project in the Federal Cabinet meeting when Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi was the Prime Minister.

The Cabinet decision then was that it was not necessary to stop the gas pipeline project but at the same time, it also instructed Petronas to give priority to Sabah if the State required the resources, he said.

"There was a guarantee that no gas will be transported to Bintulu through the gas line if there (gas) is a need here so therefore the State Government will have to look at the infrastructure for the utilisation of gas," he said.

Dompok who in the previous Federal Cabinet was a Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister's Department who was placed in charge of Petronas said furthermore, there is a lot of people in Sabah who are interested to venture into the oil and gas industry.

"My own little discussion with the (local) people in the oil and gas industry (showed) there's very little gas that can be exported because it is actually (more) needed here," he said.

Firstly, he said gas is needed for power generation in Sabah, hence little gas could be exported and it was for this reason he had expressed his view to the Federal Cabinet that perhaps the gas pipeline should not be completed.

"But if Petronas wants to go ahead with it then they must have their reasons É but when Sabah needs the gas they (Petronas) must not export.

I think that is the undertaking," he said.

Secondly, he said Petronas had been asked by the Federal Cabinet to write a Letter of Commitment to the State Government on this matter, which he believed had been already been received by the State Government "a while ago".

Dompok said the opposition had been banging him on the matter but he had raised the issue at the Federal level and was glad that there was an assurance of giving priority to Sabah needs in respect of exporting gas.

Towards this end, he said the Federal Government was very committed to assist if Sabah wants to use its gas resources itself but that the State Government needs to follow through on it.

According to him, the decision had also been documented.

A complicated matter, says Jeffrey

Source : Daily Express 12/05/2010

Kota Kinabalu: The Government is now in a tight corner from which it must answer all the hard questions raised by SAPP on the petroleum blocks issue, claims Chairman of Common Interest Group, Malaysia, Datuk Dr Jeffrey Kitingan.

He said SAPP had made a highly detailed and strong, multi-pronged presentation on the issue of Block L and M.

"It is no longer a simple matter of technicalities as Datuk Dr Marcus Mojigoh claimed. It is obviously a complicated matter, now that the cat has got out of the bag,"

The government should open the matter to the public by telling the whole truth and also decide whether it wants to pursue our state rights, he said in a statement, Tuesday.

"If the government insists on dilly-dallying in its answers, and denying that something serious had happened, it will continue to cause more confusion among the people."

"If the former Prime Minister is really concerned about our national interests he would realise that it is not just a matter of territorial sovereignty or oil alone. There are also nagging questions such as why was such an important deal involving national interests rushed through," said Jeffrey.

"Was a third party involved? And why is the State Government not showing any concern on the matter?" he asked.

"And what about the state leaders in the Federal Cabinet?

What is their stand on the matter? I hope that Mojigoh's attitude doesn't reflect the overall stand of our Members of Parliament," he said.

Wait for the Dewan debate, says Mojigoh

Source : Daily Express 12/05/2010

Kota Kinabalu: Putatan MP Datuk Dr Marcus Mojigoh believes the Brunei border petroleum blocks issue will be debated well when Parliament convenes on June 7 and that it will be his first question to the Government.

"Be patient, the Government will have its full explanation on this," he said, in response to SAPP President Datuk Yong Teck Lee's insistence that the two blocks had been ceded to Brunei.

Alternatively, he said Yong's Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP) should produce evidence that there are government documents stating Blocks L and M were actually within Sabah waters.

"Show the people these documents because SAPP is actually implying that the State Attorney-General had made a misleading statement," said Mojigoh.

He said SAPP was also implying that the State A-G was not telling the truth or hiding something when telling Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman that no Sabah area was ceded.

Mojigoh said Yong, as a former Chief Minister, should know this well.

"I appreciate Yong's statement. The question of (me) boasting does not arise and I think the word (used by Yong to refer to his statement) is a bit harsh for a gentleman," he said, Tuesday.

Mojigoh, who is Upko Treasurer General, said Yong should show any form of document that state Block L and M were within the maritime boundary in reference to Sabah within Malaysia apart from just talking about historical events.

"All we know is that those letters of exchange and related documents never say that these two blocks are within Sabah territory," he said.

Towards this end, Mojigoh said Yong was running away from the main issue that he had raised. "If Yong could not produce the document then the people would think he is lying."

Mojigoh also disputed Yong's contention that Murphy Sabah Oil Ltd is only operating within Sabah and that Yong must also not confuse the people by dragging Sipadan Ligitan and Layang Layang Atoll into the fray because the issues were totally different from the oil blocks.

"They are landed areas, which by customary are ours.

"Blocks L and M are purely watered areas ... no island there," he said, adding it cannot be denied that Malaysia has an operating right there not because they appeared to be part of Limbang's interest but because of Malaysia's prevailing cordial relationship with Brunei.

Mojigoh said what Yong should be calling for is for both governments to finalise the maritime demarcation and not harp on the sentiment of the Sabah people as if the Federal Government could anytime give away their land to outsiders at the whim and fancies of the Prime Minister.

"It is very dangerous and not good," he said.

In this respect, his earlier statement, he said, was actually telling Yong and Datuk Dr Jeffrey Kitingan that they were barking up the wrong tree.

"Let us not be drowned by our emotion ... let's look at the real issues by looking at the matters positively.

There are more pressing issues like the finalisation of our maritime boundary ... these issues need immediate solution," he said.

He said it was for this reason that he "threw the rope of friendship to certain friends who might have gone off line (course) to scramble back to the platform of discussion" instead of making wild allegations as if the government had committed a deadly sin.

"Don't say that Sabah MPs have no heart for Sabah, don't insult us," he said, while agreeing that Malaysians in Sabah have every right to be concerned about the matter.
